Top 5 Wednesdays: Chosen Ones

Even though the Chosen One trope is so common, it was somehow hard for me to think of books which have it. I think most YA fantasy tends to include some kind of Chosen One with their main characters, but somehow I had a hard time telling which would really count. The Chosen One is the character, often from humble beginnings, who is put in charge of saving their world/society, often put into an impossible situation with the fate of everything on their shoulders. Some of my favourite media (Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Harry Potter, just to name a few) contain this trope, but it is definitely something that needs to be done well in order to make it believable. I actually recently finished off the Carry On series which is a subversion of the Chosen One trope. The main character Simon is a Chosen One and the last two books in the series follow him after his mission is complete, and how he copes now that he is no longer Chosen. I love this kind of story that shows what happens next when the hero is no longer needed, and it’s something I wish we’d see more often!

Top 5 Wednesday is a meme created by Gingerreadslainey on Youtube, and is now hosted by Sam at ThoughtsOnTomes. The official GoodReads group with the weekly topics can be found here.

I decided to focus on some Chosen One trope books that I have not read yet, since I feel like my other choices would just be the most common YA dystopian series. Here are some Chosen One books that are still on my TBR:

And as a fun little extra, the whole theme of Chosen Ones reminded me of this Tumblr post that I saw several years ago, when I was still watching a lot of anime:
